With the advent of easy Pay Per Click advertising lately it seems so easy to capitalize on those hundreds, or maybe even thousands of people that visit your site each month. However, the difference between a 1% CTR and a 3% CTR may be hundreds of dollars depending on the traffic and your target keywords.
For those of you who don’t know CTR stand for Click Through Ratio, or the number of people out of those that view your site that end up clicking on an advertisement. To use an example if you had 1000 page views one day, with 100 clicks that would be a 1% CTR. Now think about if you could increase it even 1%! You would have 100 more clicks, say you averaged 50 cents a click, that $50 more everyday just by changing a few things around.
Don’t be afraid to try new things and take a little time to figure out what works best for you. So many people are in such a hurry to make money online they forget that usually these things take time and research. Luckily for us Google has already done alot of the research for us, search for “Google Heat Map”, and you will see what I mean.
Now this doesn’t mean that the upper left hand corner is always the best, it just depends on where your content is layed out. People have become so immune to ads lately that you will be fortunate to get even anything above 1% using just a standard set of ads. Play around with different configurations and locations, and be patient to see how they do! Don’t just change your ads for a few days and say, “oh well that didn’t work”. Days of the week have an impact on CTR and page views, times of the month and year will cause results to vary as well.
Remember when you were growing up and didn’t quite know how the world works. You gained the most valuable experience from playtime! That is where through trial and error you worked on motor skills, problem solving, etc. This is one case where it doesn’t hurt to play around. If you need money by next week, get a job a fast food restaurant. Online ads are for the long haul, you don’t get rich overnight using PPC ads sorry.
Keep track of how good your ads do in a certain area, and how good they do in others. Try incorporating more or less ads into the body of your site. Sometimes that will result in people not clicking on anything, and sometimes you will see higher clicks by only using them at the bottom and middle of your pages.
Different people are looking for different things. Sometimes your target audience will want to go straight to reading your text, and by the time they finish will be looking for somewhere to go. That is when placing a few RELEVANT ads at the bottom of your page will help give them something to do! Remember this is all for naught if your ads aren’t relevant. I am just assuming that you aren’t running cigar ads on a women’s health site.
Happy hunting and good luck out there!
